LONGSWORD & SHORTSWORD
Longsword Fighting
Longsword combat uses a two-handed grip for powerful strikes, precise thrusts, and defensive manoeuvres. It balances offence and defence with techniques like parries, feints, and counters. Used in duels and battlefield combat, it emphasises reach, leverage, and adaptability.
Shortsword Fighting
Shortsword combat focuses on speed, agility, and close-quarters effectiveness. It pairs well with a shield or dagger for defence while delivering quick thrusts and slashes. Favoured in duels, skirmishes, and formations, it excels in confined spaces and fast engagements.
AXE & KNIFE THROWING
Axe Throwing
Axe throwing is a skill-based practice involving the precise rotation and release of a thrown axe to strike a target. Used in hunting, combat, and sport, it requires control of distance, angle, and force. Historically, it was both a battlefield tactic and a survival tool.
Knife Throwing
Knife throwing relies on accuracy, technique, and spin control to ensure the blade sticks into the target. Used for hunting, self-defence, and competition, it demands precise grip and release. While less common in battle, it was favoured by scouts and assassins for silent takedowns.
FENCING
Fencing is a fast-paced combat sport where opponents use lightweight swords, such as foil, epee, or sabre, to score points by landing controlled thrusts or cuts. It focuses on footwork, timing, and strategy, combining speed, precision, and defensive manoeuvres. Historically, fencing evolved from duelling and military training.
CIRCUS SKILLS
Circus skills encompass a wide range of performance arts, including juggling, acrobatics, tightrope walking, clowning, and aerial feats. These skills require balance, coordination, and precision, often performed in spectacular routines. Historically, they were developed for entertainment and spectacle, showcasing physical mastery and creativity.
Sword and buckler
Sword and buckler is a fast-paced, close-combat style using a small shield (the buckler) and a one-handed sword. It focuses on quick strikes, agile footwork, and precise defence, allowing for rapid attacks and evasions.
HAND AXE FIGHTING
Hand axe fighting involves using a single hand axe for both offence and defence. It relies on quick, powerful strikes, precise throws, and the ability to block or deflect attacks with the axe, making it a versatile and agile style for close-quarters combat.
PIRATE CUTLASS
Pirate cutlass fighting is characterised by swift, sweeping strikes with a curved, single-edged sword designed for close combat. It focuses on powerful, cutting blows, quick slashes, and agile movements, perfect for boarding actions and fast-paced duels.
ARCHERY
Archery is the art of using a bow to launch arrows with precision and skill. It combines accuracy, range, and timing, requiring focus to hit distant targets with speed and power, whether in target practice or battle.
TOMAHAWK AND KNIFE
Tomahawk and knife fighting involves using a hand-held axe (tomahawk) and a small blade (knife) in combat. It focuses on quick, precise strikes, throws, and deflections, with an emphasis on agility and versatility in close-quarters or ranged engagements.
STAGE COMBAT
Stage combat is the choreographed art of performing fight scenes safely and convincingly for theatre or film. It combines precision, timing, and dramatic flair, ensuring that combat looks intense and realistic while protecting the performers.
KENJUTSU
Kenjutsu is the traditional Japanese martial art of swordsmanship, focusing on the techniques of drawing, cutting, and striking with a katana. It emphasizes discipline, precise movements, and timing, with practitioners learning to master both attack and defence in one fluid motion.
POLLAXE & DANE AXE
Pollaxe and Dane axe combat combines a long-handled weapon with a broad blade, offering powerful sweeping strikes, thrusts, and versatile control. It blends cutting, crushing, and thrusting techniques for both range and close combat.
WHIPS
Whip skills focus on precision, speed, and control, using the whip for a variety of tricks like cracking, looping, and coiling. It involves mastering techniques like the “bullwhip crack” and “lassoing,” as well as creative displays of agility and timing to manipulate the whip with finesse.
ROPE DART
Rope dart is a martial art that uses a weighted dart attached to a length of rope. It combines striking, spinning, and entangling techniques, allowing for dynamic, fluid movements that can strike targets from a distance or up close. Precision and control are key to mastering its flexibility.
ATLATL – SPEAR THROWING
Atlatl, or spear-throwing, is the use of a levered tool to launch a spear with greater force and distance. It enhances the speed and power of the throw, requiring precision and technique to accurately hit targets from a distance.
